Private Students

Eyobel klein

My students are diverse and varied and represent a broad spectrum. In my class there are singers who perform solo or direct choirs themselves alongside beginners who are still learning how to "find" a note with their voice in the first place. They come from all age groups: Children, teenagers and adults.

I count as success not only the students who win prizes or pass an entrance exam, but also those who, thanks to the lessons,  join a choir, start to sing in a band with friends, or who, are able to present themselves more effectively at work with their speaking voice.

As a teacher, I seek an approach to the voice that moves away from an external aesthetic of "how something ought to sound." Each student gets to experience how their voice reacts to different aspects of body, breath and sound and how it is possible to crystallize elements of a singing style that is appropriate for their particular voice and the body. In the lessons, we experience both experienced systematically the  manifold interrelations between body and voice. From this point of view of "listening inwardly" we can return outwardly to the artfully communicating aspect of the voice - singing!

Here I find it very helpful to be able to draw on a wealth of musical experience myself. This includes classical song, oratorio and opera repertoire, but also Yiddish and Sephardic music, new and experimental music, music of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, as well as jazz and musicals. There are so many wonderful musical works that can stimulate and uncover the voice! These serve as a starting point for further discovery. Individual inclinations and talents can be better grasped and nurtured. In the course of my own education, I had the good fortune to come into contact with a lot of different music and to be able to try it out myself, both as a singer and as an instrumentalist. The demands I experienced and still experience reinforce my conviction that a singing method must first and foremost be a broad-based vocal training, regardless of style.

About my education: I earned my B.A in Psychology & Linguistics at Swarthmore College, my Master of Music (Historical Performance Practices in Voice, minor in Recorder) at Washington University in St. Louis, and became a state-certified music educator in voice at the HdK Berlin. Along with classical training, I benefited significantly from "functional" vocal methods, with lessons and courses with Gisela Rohmert, courses with Cornelius Reid and Eugen Rabine.

I teach in my own "Studio Am Sonnenhang" in Geisenheim-Stephanshausen, as well as in the cooperative Musiklehrernetzwerk Wiesbaden e.V., with classrooms in the Wiesbaden School for Acting (Wellritzstrasse) and the Humbolt School in Moosbacherstrasse. As a voice teacher, I've worked for (i.a.) the Kiedricher Chorbuben and the Wiesbaden Boys Choir. Since 2010 I have directed the Children's Chorus and Music Theater AG at the Emely-Salzig Elementary School in Geisenheim. This chorus won the Hessian School Theater Award in 2020 for the musical theater "The OTHER Jungle Book".
