An evening with Heinrich Heine:
Musical-literary program withSongs, Poems and Prose
Set to music by Brahms, Hensel, Liszt, Mendelssohn, Meyerbeer, Pfitzner, Schubert, Schumann, Strauss, Wieck.
Eleven composers all told, with some well-known and beloved pieces such as Mendelssohn's Auf Flügeln des Gesanges or Schubert's Doppelgänger, but also precious rarities such as Pfitzner's Wasserfahrt or Klara Wieck's Lore-ley.The evening is moderated by Heine's own words - witty, lyrical, biting - as versatile as the poet and critic himself.
"An evening with Heinrich Heine ... a rare jewel with sparkling brilliance. Compliments to the delicate dramturgie of the performers, who sketched a cleverly dramatized arc of tension from the Lorelei to " Der Tod, das ist die kühle Nacht".... Gottfried Herbe proved to be a gifted reciter.... "Floating on wings of song", Elizabeth Neiman carried the audience off into other worlds with her cultivated mezzo-soprano full of naturally effective radiant sound. ... excellent declamation of the sung text, unobtrusively paired with intuitive phrasing and emotional narrative power without disturbing pathos....
The subtle interplay of the trio created an incredibly dense atmosphere which one rarely experiences. The audience virtually breathed with them, allowing the echoes of the tones of text and music the space they deserved to resonate before the heartfelt applause. Heinrich Heine would certainly have enjoyed the delightfully harmonious evening, which we hope will be repeated many times. "
